So everyone knows Spain won on Sunday by beating Netherlands through an Iniesta goal in extra time. We’ve reached the penultimate day of the month long extravaganza. The last game of the World Cup 2010 sees the 1974 and 1978 finalists Netherlands take on the “perennial underachievers” Spain. Both sides would want to add a World Cup trophy to their illustrious footballing cabinet which has so far only European Championship trophies to speak of. Their history and promise has long been admired only to be broken each time at crucial stages of the World Cup competitions. While Spain come from a Euro 2008 victory and their desire to spread that domination to the World stage, Netherlands would want to prove their overall dominance since the inception of the qualifiers and during the competition itself by maintaining their 100% record.

The cruelest and as many would say, the most unimportant game of the world cup will take place at Port Elizabeth tonight. Cruelest because two teams will play for residual glory just days after seeing their dreams of competing in world cup final crushed. Most unimportant because hardly anyone remembers the result or cares about today’s match apart from the participating countries. Losing is hard but competing for the prize of best loser is rubbing salt in the wounds.

We are now going to have a first time World Cup winner. While this will not be the first time Holland has reached the finals, it is the first time Spain has ever come this far. Germany were second best tonight as Spain won once again
with a one goal margin.
